Two cards can both say “microSDXC 256 GB” and belong to different host generations. That is the trap created by microSD Express: capacity and physical size look familiar, but the interface decision now determines whether a console can use the card for games at all.

For buyers and resellers, “gaming microSD” is no longer one shelf. Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam Deck need different answers.

Nintendo states that Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express for downloaded software and related storage [1]. A standard microSD previously used in an original Switch can be inserted to import captured screenshots and videos, but it cannot store or load digital games on Switch 2. The first use of an Express card also requires an online system update, and Nintendo supports capacities up to 2 TB [1].

Valve takes a different path. Steam Support specifies UHS-I, Class 3 or better for Steam Deck and says UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work but their higher transfer speeds are not supported [2]. That means a good UHS-I U3 card is the rational baseline. A more expensive interface cannot add bandwidth the host slot does not expose.

What microSD Express changes

Traditional UHS-I microSD uses the SD bus. microSD Express adds a PCI Express interface and the NVMe protocol, the same broad storage architecture used by modern SSDs [3]. This is why Express is not just another V rating. It changes how the host talks to the card.

SD Association defines Express performance classes separately:

These marks are designed to help a buyer match an Express host to an Express card [4]. They are different from U1/U3 and V30/V60/V90, which belong to earlier SD/UHS recording systems. A card may carry several relevant marks, but U3 or V30 alone does not prove that it is microSD Express.

For Switch 2, look for the microSD Express identification and follow Nintendo's compatibility guidance. Do not infer compatibility from “up to 200 MB/s,” “gaming,” the artwork on the package or the fact that the card physically fits.

Backward compatibility has limits

SD Express was designed with a legacy SD path, but the host implementation decides which path is available [3]. That creates three different outcomes buyers often collapse into one:

  1. The card fits physically. This says nothing about which interface the host uses.
  2. The card can fall back to a legacy mode. It may work, but only at the older host's speed.
  3. The host uses PCIe/NVMe Express mode. This is where Express performance becomes available.

Nintendo explicitly documents the fallback case: a microSD Express card works in the original Switch, but its access speed is equivalent to a normal microSD card [1]. Paying the Express premium for an original Switch therefore buys future reuse, not current console performance.

For Steam Deck, Valve documents UHS-I and does not promise Express-mode operation [2]. Avoid telling customers that an Express card will load games faster on Deck without device-specific proof.

Capacity still needs a host check

A reseller checklist for gaming cards

Before listing a card as “Switch 2 compatible” or “for Steam Deck,” verify:

  • Host generation: Switch, Switch 2, Steam Deck or another handheld.
  • Interface mark: Express versus UHS-I; do not rely on package theme.
  • Required class: Express class for an Express host; U3 where Valve specifies it.
  • Capacity limit: supported by that exact host and current firmware.
  • Full-capacity authenticity: test a sample across its complete address space, not only a quick benchmark.
  • Sustained and random behavior: game installation and loading are not the same workload as sequential video capture.
  • Thermal behavior: an NVMe-based removable device has a different power and heat envelope from a basic UHS-I card.
  • Lot traceability: keep model, capacity, firmware/revision and supplier lot tied to test results.

Switch 2 requires microSD Express for game storage; Steam Deck is officially a UHS-I U3 host. The same physical card size does not make the interfaces interchangeable at full performance. Match the host first, identify the real interface logo, then choose capacity and validate the actual card. That one sequence prevents both failures: a card the console rejects and a premium card whose speed the console cannot use.
